La variante alla SR 429, nei 17 km tra Empoli e Castelfiorentino, comprende cinque gallerie, viadotti e un cavalcaferrovia. E’ quindi normale che per opere di queste dimensioni possa insorgere la necessità di effettuare degli interventi ‘in variante’. Questa possibilità è espressamente prevista dalla normativa che regolamenta le cosiddette ‘varianti in corso d’opera’ che peraltro non fermano l’esecuzione dei lavori. Nel  caso specifico,  le varianti sono dovute, tra l'altro, ad una precisa istanza giunta dal Genio militare, che ha chiesto, contrariamente a quanto inizialmente previsto, di effettuare su tutto il tracciato una bonifica ‘profonda’ del terreno, per exclude the presence of any weapons of war.
